This Week:
EMBATTLED! - The Divided Nation [1830-1865]

"A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided."
Abraham Lincoln
A Storm is coming...

...while we were moving West, the struggle over slavery was continuing throughout the country. And while Henry Clay's Missouri Compromise of 1820 held the peace for almost thirty years, the horrible Supreme Court decision of Dred Scott reignited the debate. Henry Clay once again to the rescue with the Compromise of 1850...

...but the rift was still too deep and too wide. It was only a matter of time that our nation would completely pull apart...or battle to remain a Union.
